Chair of Trustees joins Special Olympics Board

Nick Townsend, Self Unlimited’s Chair of Trustees, has joined the Board of the Special Olympics, which are scheduled to take place in Leicester from 25 to 31 July 2009. In excess of 10,000 spectators will visit the city to see nearly 3,000 athletes with learning disabilities compete in twenty one sports across the city and Rutland.

Nick Townsend has been a Trustee of the Charity since 2000 and is passionate about his support for the event. “The Special Olympics are a tremendous opportunity for people with a learning disability. The Festival itself is non-elitist, and gives people the chance of a lifetime to take part in events they would never normally be able to do. Then there is the sporting infrastructure, which allows people to train for up to three years in their chosen sport.”

He added that he considered it would enhance Leicester’s reputation as a city worth visiting, together with raising the profile of people with learning disabilities among the many communities in the region and across the country as a whole.
