Kielder Cottage

Kielder Cottage - increased care for complex needs

At North Road, Ponteland, we have a specially adapted house that provides specialist registered accommodation for eight residents (male and female), who have learning disabilities but with an additional dementia diagnosis. It is our aim to provide a happy, homely yet stimulating environment where each person is treated with respect, dignity and compassion, and where everyone is encouraged to fulfil their potential.

KIELDER’S PHILOSOPHY:

A clear focus on the needs and wishes of each person and a respect for their personal background and culture and continuing chosen lifestyle

To recognise and respond to each person’s needs on an individual basis

To create an atmosphere of peace and calm where people can enjoy living and are encouraged to continue using the skills they have retained

To provide a holistic approach to individual’s needs

To individually tailor care and health plans

To provide appropriate therapies and interesting, stimulating activities to promote daily living skills.

Kielder has eight bedrooms, a lounge, dining room and conservatory. There are six bathrooms, two of which are fitted with Parker baths. Great care has been taken with the interior decoration and detailing, including the installation of Karndean flooring throughout, specially selected to be suitable for residents with dementia at all stages. Its plain surface is neither slippery or shiny and allows people to negotiate the building without imagining changes in floor levels or ‘wet’ patches.

The garden is spacious, safe and secure. It has been designed with raised beds and handrails so that everyone can enjoy the sensory aspect of the garden, while there is a seating area for quiet times in the fresh air on sunny days.
