Self Unlimited provides a wide choice of meaningful day activities for people with learning disabilities in Kent from our centre at Phillippines Close, Edenbridge, including vocational training and Supported Employment. Using ongoing Person Centred Planning, each activity is geared to individual choice and level of ability.
Our award-winning, environmentally friendly ‘Acorns’ Horticulture Centre offers people a chance to develop their horticulture skills whilst working in a modern, well-equipped business environment. With its twin wind turbines providing the electricity, solar panels to heat the water, grey water recycling, sedum roof and environmentally friendly insulation, we were delighted to win our category in the South East Environmental Development Agency’s (SEEDA) Awards in November 2006 for the new eco building.
We also run a thriving restaurant on site, the ‘Oak Tree’ Bistro, where catering trainees prepare and serve a variety of dishes to the general public and also host the local Rotary Club each week. The café is very popular amongst local townsfolk, with many coming each week to enjoy a meal as well as to purchase items from the variety of other homemade produce available, including cakes, jams and chutneys.
A range of other activities are undertaken on site, including our Music Workshop, the first of its kind in the area, which encourages music as both an enjoyable and educational pastime, as well as a therapy for those less able.
Many other crafts are undertaken, such as sewing, weaving and making greetings cards. These activities both encourage social skills as well as the development of manual dexterity, while all of our day services and training aim to improve confidence and nurture self esteem.
Many of our classes are open to people in the wider community that have learning disabilities. For more details call 01732 782700.
