Day activities

Self Unlimited offers person-centred, individually tailored day services fully governed by each client’s aspirations and choice. Our professional staff teams in the South West are continually seeking new activities and training that will meet and exceed the current and anticipated needs of people with learning disabilities in the area.

We offer a diverse range of interesting and challenging activities and training, as well as a variety of leisure pursuits to allow each individual to develop holistically. Our aim is that everyone, whatever their skills or abilities, should be given the appropriate support and encouragement to enable them to develop the confidence to strive for their own personal goals.

Long established activities in the South West include Textiles, which involves spinning, weaving, knitting, sewing, patchwork and appliqué and which has produced some incredibly beautiful, high quality items over the years. Our Woodwork workshop also craft pieces as diverse as a spatula to a fully customised fitted kitchen and are also renowned for their quality and expertise.

All goods produced by our training and craft workshops can be purchased (or ordered, in the case of a bespoke item) from the Shop on site at Blackerton, open Monday to Friday, 9 am until 5 pm, and weekends by appointment. Alternatively, check out our On-line Shop, where there is a choice of limited edition craft items for purchase.

Leisure activities are positively encouraged and, with the close proximity to Exmoor, it is no surprise that these include horse riding and carriage driving, as well as many other outdoor pursuits. We are also keen on supporting people to undertake Life Story Work and scrap-booking, as both a hobby and a therapy. We encourage sport and are keen to provide encouragement to individuals pursuing their own chosen activity – even as far as one of our clients, who trains regularly in the local pool to enable him to take part in the Special Olympics as a swimmer. We also have a talented Boccia team in its infancy, which we are keen to encourage!

Our vocational training caters for all skills levels and we also provide an Employment Coach, who provides a tailored course for those interested in seeking real work placements in the wider community, and also helps with the preparation of CVs and interview skills as well as finding that all important job.

We also offer a Citizenship Course that enables our clients to reflect upon and discuss the complexities of being a truly valued member of the local community, while exploring how and where they would like to live and establishing a path towards their goals.
